Barn Hunt Introductory Workshop

When: Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 from 8:30am-2pm
Where: Branchwater Farm, 1800 Knox Avenue, Reisterstown, MD 21136
Lunch included!!!

What It Is: Barn Hunt is a new, fun sport to try with your dog. It is based on the traditional roles of many breeds in ridding farms, barns, crop storage areas, and homes of destructive vermin. The Barn Hunt Association (www.barnhunt.com) sanctions many Barn Hunt trials around the country that are open to any dog of any breed (including mixed breeds!) who wish to play the game. Dogs must be able to climb over or jump onto or crawl through mazes and tunnels built from straw bales while they search out and identify rat hiding places.

[And don’t worry about the rats. They are contained in special “rat tubes” designed to protect the dogs and rats from each other 😊]

The main instructor is Colin Ratcliffe, who is a BHA judge and administrator with Barn Hunt Association LLC. There will be other instructors, who are all active competitors in the sport. This will include Doreen Suchting, owner of Branchwater Farms, Inc. She placed 3rd in the Barn Hunt Nationals with her dog Kindle!

  • Colin will provide an introduction to the sport including:
  • Explanation of the Rules
  • Intro to the Rat
  • Rat Instinct Test (non-official)
  • Introduction to Course Building and Rat Wrangling
  • Cost: $85 for a working spot (1 handler, 1 dog), ($30 audit- handler only). Pre-registration is required and working spots are limited. Note: This is not a sanctioned BHA event; it is just for fun and education.
